Global Peace International writes about histories that people carry personally and about events that are still being argued over. We want those arguments to happen here, in the open. Keeping that possible is the whole purpose of this policy.
Who can comment
Commenting is open to members of the Global Armenian Registry. Members sign in with the “Member sign in” link at the top of any page, using their registered email address and the access code from the Registry app. Registration is free, and anyone who supports the work of this organization is welcome to join the Registry.
We keep the discussion with our members on purpose. Their opinion is the one we most want to hear, and a room where people stand behind what they say is a room where a difficult subject can actually be discussed. Readers who are not members are always welcome to write to us directly.
Everything is reviewed before it appears
Every comment submitted to the News Room is read by a moderator before it becomes visible to anyone else. Nothing is published automatically. Your comment will therefore not appear the moment you send it; we aim to review submissions within one business day, and longer over weekends and holidays.
We moderate to a standard, not to a viewpoint. Criticism of Global Peace International, of our research, of our conclusions and of the people who write for us is published on the same terms as praise.
What we publish
- Argument and disagreement, however firmly expressed, provided it is aimed at ideas and evidence.
- Corrections. If we have a fact wrong, say so — and if you can, say where the correct version can be verified.
- First-hand testimony and family history relevant to the subject of the article.
- Questions, including ones we may not be able to answer.
- Links to sources, where the link supports a point you are making.
What we decline
- Attacks on people rather than ideas — insults, mockery, or abuse directed at other commenters, at our staff, or at named individuals.
- Hatred or contempt directed at a nation, ethnicity, religion or people. Holding a government to account is legitimate; condemning a population is not, and it is the fastest way to end a conversation worth having.
- Threats or incitement to violence, including implied or joking ones.
- Denial or celebration of atrocity crimes, including genocide denial.
- Personal details of private individuals — addresses, telephone numbers, workplaces, family members.
- Spam and promotion, including repeated posting of the same material and links unrelated to the discussion.
- Impersonation of another person or organization.
- Material that is unlawful or that would place us or our readers at legal risk.
Practical matters
Your name. Comment under the name you are willing to stand behind. We understand that some of our members have sound reasons to write under a pseudonym, and we accept that; we do not accept impersonation.
Your email address. Your registered email lets a moderator reach you if a comment needs clarification. It is never published and never sold.
Language. Comment in whatever language you are most comfortable in. Review may take longer where we need a translation.
Length and relevance. Keep to the subject of the article. Very long submissions may be better sent to us as a letter, and we are glad to receive those.
Editing. We do not rewrite comments. A comment is either published as submitted or not published.
Removal. A published comment may be removed later if it turns out to breach this policy. Persistent breaches may result in a commenter being blocked.
Closing discussions. Comments on an article may be closed once a discussion has run its course, or if it becomes impossible to moderate to this standard.
If your comment was not published
A decision not to publish is a judgement about a single comment, not about the person who wrote it, and it is not a judgement about whether we agree. If you believe we have made a mistake, write to info@globalpeaceinternational.com and a person will look at it again.
Responsibility
Comments are the opinions of the people who write them. Publishing a comment does not mean Global Peace International endorses it. Nothing in a comment thread should be taken as our position; ours is in the article.
